Jihadists are burning Christian villages in Syria

In Syria, the Christian region of Wadi al-Nasara, a region whose name translates to the “Valley of the Christians,” is facing devastating forest fires that have destroyed crops and are threatening historic communities. Residents denounce the lack of support from the new Islamist government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an offshoot of al-Qaeda that overthrew Bashar al-Assad in December.

Locals have been forced to fight the flames with rudimentary means such as buckets and tractors, in the absence of aircraft and heavy machinery. The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has warned of suspected arson. Residents are urgently demanding intervention from Damascus to prevent the fire from reaching populated areas.

Meanwhile, Sharaa was in New York participating in the U.N. General Assembly, seeking international support, the lifting of sanctions, and funding for the country’s reconstruction. Although he has promised to protect religious minorities, distrust is growing among Christian communities and other groups, who fear persecution under an Islamist government.
