Elon Musk warns: “The void left by religion is being filled by destructive ideologies”

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again sparked debate by speaking out on the role of religion and the growing influence of new ideological currents in society. According to the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, when religion is removed from the cultural and moral sphere, something inevitably arises to replace it—but what emerges may be even more harmful.

“Nature abhors a vacuum, and if you take away religion, then I think what you actually get is something in its place that turns out to be worse than what was there before. That is to say, it’s basically destructive,” Musk stated. In his words, the spiritual void is being filled by what he calls a “woke mind virus,” which he describes as a kind of dystopian religion that acts in a self-destructive manner within society.

Musk suggested that what is needed is not necessarily a strict return to traditional religion, but rather a coherent and inspiring philosophy capable of providing a solid framework of values and a collective sense of purpose. “I think maybe some kind of resurgence of religion—or at least what we need—is some coherent philosophy that people can get excited about,” he added.

Musk’s statements come within the broader context of an increasingly heated cultural debate in the West, where tensions between traditional values, secularization, and new ideological trends such as radical progressivism are shaping the social and political landscape. Critics of “wokeism” argue that, lacking a stable spiritual or philosophical foundation, these ideologies tend to devolve into rigid and divisive dogmas that undermine social cohesion.
