The Eumenides by Aeschylus

The Eumenides by Aeschylus is the final play in the Oresteia trilogy. It follows Orestes after he has killed his mother Clytemnestra (to avenge her murder of his father), and the torment he endures from the Erinyes (also called the Furies), the goddesses of vengeance. Seeking purification, he is guided by Apollo to Athens, where Athena organizes the first trial by jury in myth to decide his fate. The Furies demand blood‐for‐blood justice; Apollo and Athena argue for a newer kind of justice, one based on law, reason, and balance. In the end, with a tied vote resolved by Athena’s deciding vote, Orestes is acquitted. But more than that, the Furies are transformed: instead of remaining forces of vengeance, they become the Eumenides (“the Kindly Ones”), protectors of Athens who are honored rather than feared. The play explores themes of justice, guilt, divine will, the tension between old customs and new order, and the role of the polis (city-state) in establishing fair institutions.
