On October twenty-sixth, nineteen hundred and eleven, Shiing-Shen Chern was born in Jiaxing, China. He was a mathematician, and his academic field was differential geometry and topology, particularly the study of curves and surfaces in higher dimensions.

Chern was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, and his work provided a new geometric language for understanding the very shape of space. His groundbreaking contribution was the development of what are now known as Chern classes. These are fundamental geometric and topological invariants that measure the curvature complexity of manifolds – abstract spaces that can have many dimensions. Chern classes became an indispensable tool not only in pure mathematics but also in theoretical physics, where they play a central role in the understanding of gauge theories and string theory. Through his work and his role as a mentor to generations of mathematicians worldwide, Chern established a global research environment in geometry. He received numerous prestigious awards, including the Wolf Prize, for shaping modern differential geometry and its applications in physics.
