To commemorate this important event in Russian military history, Decree No. 549 of the President of the Russian Federation dated May 31, 2006, established a commemorative date – Russian Ground Forces Day, celebrated annually on October 1.

On this day in 1550, Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) issued a decree "On the placement of a select thousand servicemen in Moscow and surrounding districts," marking the beginning of the creation of the first standing army in Rus', which had the characteristics of a regular army.

For a long time, the Ground Forces were the country's sole armed force. At all stages of our state's existence, they played a vital, often decisive, role in achieving victory over the enemy and defending the interests of the Fatherland.

The historical legacy of the Ground Forces cannot be overestimated. This includes the military feat of the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo, the brilliant strategic and tactical decisions of Field Marshal Sheremetev during the Northern War, the forward-looking reforms of the Russian army under Field Marshal Potemkin, the famous Brusilov Offensive, and the battles of Rzhev, Kursk, and Stalingrad.

Today, the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are the largest and most diverse branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in terms of weapons and combat methods, designed to repel enemy aggression in continental theaters of military operations and protect the territorial integrity and national interests of the Russian Federation. The Ground Forces are designed to conduct combat operations primarily on land.

The Ground Forces include: motorized rifle troops, tank troops, missile troops and artillery, air defense troops, reconnaissance formations and units, engineering troops, radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops, and communications troops.

Ground Forces units and formations are part of military districts and form the backbone of troop groupings in strategic directions, with the qualitative and quantitative composition of the forces constantly being improved to address emerging geopolitical threats.

Since the formation of the new Russian Armed Forces, considerable attention has been paid to the modernization of weapons and military equipment. Work is ongoing with enterprises in the country's defense industry to establish the production of weapons, military, and special-purpose equipment with new tactical and technical characteristics that meet modern requirements. All existing models of weapons and special equipment in service with the Ground Forces have been combat-tested during the military operation in the Syrian Arab Republic and other current local conflicts and are currently being successfully used in special military operations.

The regulatory framework has also been improved. Ground Forces combat regulations, instructions for conducting tactical exercises (with and without live fire), shooting and driving courses, and a collection of combat training standards have been updated. The new guidelines place significant emphasis on the individual training of military personnel.

Today, Ground Forces personnel, using and refining new combat tactics, effectively accomplish missions during the Second Military Operation.

Ground Forces personnel demonstrate the highest level of training. Many service members have been awarded high state and departmental awards for their courage and bravery.
