On May 26, 2025—Memorial Day—at approximately 7:40 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Daniel Weston Sherrer was fatally shot while responding to a domestic dispute and reported shooting at a residence on the 100 block of County Road 26, near Marengo, outside Columbus, Ohio. The 31-year-old deputy arrived to find the suspect, Brian Michael Wilson, 53, seated on the porch. Attempting to de-escalate, Sherrer approached cautiously, but Wilson threatened him with a firearm, warning him not to come closer. Sherrer maintained distance, continuing dialogue to calm the situation.

Despite these efforts, Wilson moved to the porch steps and fired at Sherrer, who was struck multiple times while returning gunfire. Two firearms were recovered from the scene, believed to have been used by Wilson. Sherrer was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries that night. Wilson was wounded in the exchange and hospitalized in serious condition.

Following the incident, authorities filed charges against Wilson in Morrow County Municipal Court. He faces 14 counts, including aggravated murder, murder, and felonious assault. Wilson was indicted in early June 2025 and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on June 17, 2025, appearing in court in a wheelchair. A judge set his bond at $9 million. Pretrial motions are scheduled for May 8, 2026, with jury selection to follow one month later, leading to a jury trial in the summer of 2026. If convicted, Morrow County prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.
