Thousands flee violence in eastern DRC as Uganda faces growing refugee crisis

Thousands of Congolese refugees are fleeing violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with over 63,000 crossing into Uganda since January.
At the Nyakabande transit centre in western Uganda, families recount harrowing stories of separation, sexual violence, and forced conscription by armed groups.
Many arrive deeply traumatised, seeking safety after escaping territories controlled by the M23 rebels and other militias.
Uganda, already hosting nearly 2 million refugees, is struggling to provide assistance amidst dwindling aid funds. Refugees face uncertain futures as they are relocated to settlements far from the border, while ongoing peace talks offer little reassurance for those who have only known conflict.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports from Nyakabande, western Uganda.
