Government shuts down after last-ditch vote fails in Senate

The Senate has rejected a Republican funding bill, putting the U.S. government on track for its first shutdown in nearly seven years.

The measure failed 55–45, short of the 60 votes needed, after Democrats demanded an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune accused Democrats of forcing a shutdown, while Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans were refusing to negotiate.

President Trump threatened cuts to programs Democrats favor if the shutdown proceeds, as federal agencies prepared to furlough workers, the Associated Press has reported.

The impasse echoes Trump’s 2018–19 shutdown but now reflects Democrats leveraging their votes to secure health care priorities.
