[Coffee & Whiteboard] Democracy vs. Republic: What Did the Founders Say?

We're breaking down the founding principles in this quick-hit shorthand session. Forget the long history books—I've distilled the key arguments right here:

The Big Difference: Representation vs. Direct Rule. A pure democracy means everyone votes on everything. The Founders feared this would lead to the "tyranny of the majority" (a.k.a. mob rule). The U.S. uses a representative republic, where we elect officials to make laws for us, which James Madison thought would "refine and enlarge the public views."

The Constitutional Guardrails. We are a constitutional republic. This means our representatives can't just do whatever they want! Their power is strictly limited by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which protects minority rights from popular opinion.

This is a primitive setting—just the facts on the board and the notes in my hand. No frills, just my take on this.

Your Turn to Decide
These are my thoughts based on the structure and limitations set up by the Founders. Your views may differ, and that's great!

So, after seeing the shorthand review, what's the answer? The United States of America: A Democracy or a Republic?
