* Less than 1% of the US owned slaves and that slavery occurred only in the South.

* Less than 5% of the South owned slaves. Only the wealthy could afford to buy them much less feed/house them.

* Slaves were expensive to purchase, costing over 1yr salary of the average American.

* Blacks made up the highest percentage of slave owners. Roughly 25% of free blacks in the US owned slaves.

* Irish were also slaves in the US an indentured servants. Because they had 7 year contracts and could not be owned, they were often given the most dangerous and back-breaking work (how do you treat a rental car compared to the car you own and must pay to maintain?)

* The first US lawsuit from someone demanding a runway slave be returned to them was filed by a black man (Anthony Johnson). You can read the court documents here: https://encyclopediavirginia.org/entries/court-ruling-on-anthony-johnson-and-his-servant-1655/

* Slaves were purchased from black slavers in Africa. No white man ever captured/kidnapped a black slave.

* Slave buyers often never left the ship due to rampant disease in Africa they had no immunity against. Black African liaisons would handle the slave transactions for them.

* The majority of African slaves sold went to the Middle East and to South America.

* The people who funded expeditions to purchase slaves from Africa and often owned the slave ships themselves, were Jewish.
