Michael Cohen, former personal lawyer to Donald Trump, sparked controversy by claiming that James Comey, former FBI director, "probably committed a crime" and that it is "likely" he will be found guilty. These statements were made during an appearance on MSNBC on September 27, 2025, following the formal indictment of Comey for lying to Congress and obstructing an investigation related to the Russia probe.

Cohen based his assertion on his personal experience with the Department of Justice (DOJ), alluding to the existence of documents and communications that could support the charges against Comey. He also mentioned that he used journalist Brian Karem, a White House correspondent with 30 years of experience, to obtain information from sources within the government who did not want to speak directly with him.

The indictment against Comey stems from his testimony before the Senate in 2020, in which he denied authorizing or being aware of leaks to the media about FBI investigations related to Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. However, prosecutors argue that Comey approved a leak connected to an October 2016 Wall Street Journal article about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation.
