The Pigeons of Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome may have more Pigeons than New York City does today. Pigeons were revered for their meat, eggs, the fertilizer quality of their droppings, as low-maintenance pets and for delivering messages between kingdoms during battles. The lineage of certain Pigeons that were bred was documented in as much detail as race horses today. Pigeon homes housing thousands of birds were build atop apartments and around kingdoms, often costing as much as a human house.

Churches used them as a symbol of peace & love (the white Dove Pigeon is still used for that today) and gravestones were often carved to show the dead holding a Pigeon as a symbol of eternal rest. Pigeons were also depicted throughout ancient Roman art. The term "my Pigeon" was a Roman term of endearment, like "my love" or "my baby" is today. Today, Pigeons are often seen as pests, or "feathered rats" scattered throughout cities, but to the Romans they were highly respected and admired.
