Enter by the narrow gate. These are not soft words. Jesus sets before us a fork in the road and calls one way life and the other way destruction, and then He adds a detail that cuts through our self deception. Many travel the easy road and only a few find the narrow one. The narrow gate is not a slogan or a tribe. It is a Person and a way. Jesus says I am the door and I am the way and the truth and the life. The narrow way is the way of the cross, of obedience that costs us our pride and our right to be right, of love that chooses to be clean before God even if it means being misunderstood by people. The wide road is comfortable agreement with the crowd, the path lubricated by applause, the lane where algorithms carry us and we hardly notice our drift. The narrow way requires a conscious, daily choice to follow Jesus when it would be easier to follow sentiment, headlines, and personalities. The wide way lets us keep our bitterness as long as we can baptize it in religious language. The narrow way crucifies bitterness and resurrects mercy.
