Over the past weekend, the U.S. was rocked by two separate mass sh00tings carried out by former Marines — one at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, where four worshippers were slain and eight others wounded, and another at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina, which left three dead and multiple injured.

In both cases, the accused assailants are combat veterans who served in Iraq and have raised questions about the intersection of battlefield trauma, mental health challenges, and access to high-powered firearms.
