Also, did I ever tell you the story of my getting malaria in Vietnam? We were picked up from the war zone by a helicopter and transported to a safe zone where we got to relax for 2 days. There was plenty of food, cigarettes and alcohol. The first night, I realized that I was a not meant for cigarettes or alcohol. The cigarettes make me cough horribly. The beer might have been worse, because my Marine Corps friends drank a lot of beer, but seemed OK. I, on the other hand, drank two beers and felt very high, so I quit. The Marines chided me all evening. “Doc, why aren’t you drinking? What a light weight!” You know me. I think most illness is preceded by exposure to fungal mycotoxins. As crazy as this has sounded for 55 years, I have long believed that fungal mycotoxins, like beer, contributed to or caused my malaria! After a rough night, the next morning I went to the dispensary and told another Hospital Corpsman that I was really, really, sick, perhaps even drunk. He took some blood and told me that I was not drunk, but I had malaria. Don’t miss this true story because science is sounding off on my 55-year-old hypothesis.
