The incident unfolded just before p.m. on Sept. 20, 2025. The officer had responded to a single-vehicle crash on the busy highway, a key corridor connecting metro Atlanta's northern suburbs to the city center. As he investigated the scene, authorities say a motorcyclist traveling northbound at speeds exceeding 100 mph lost control, veered off course, and was ejected from the bike.

The unmanned motorcycle then careened across the lanes, slamming into the officer and the vehicle involved in the original crash. The impact left the officer with multiple broken bones and other serious injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon, and is now in stable condition.

The motorcyclist, identified as 32-year-old Riad I. Ahmed of Atlanta, was also ejected and sustained serious injuries. He was hospitalized, underwent surgery, and is in stable condition. Police allege Ahmed was driving under the influence at the time, prompting charges including DUI, reckless driving, and serious injury by vehicle. An investigation revealed he may have been racing another vehicle, leading to additional felony charges against 28-year-old David Anthony Hightower, who is accused of street racing and contributing to the crash.
