Moldova’s election result bolsters move towards EU and away from Moscow

Moldova’s pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) secured a parliamentary majority in Sunday’s election, winning about 50% of the vote and 55 of 101 seats.

The result strengthens President Maia Sandu’s push for EU membership despite alleged Russian interference, cyberattacks, and bomb threats during the vote.

Opposition leader Igor Dodon’s pro-Russian bloc came in second with 24%, but rejected the outcome and called for protests.

European leaders praised Moldova’s choice, while Moscow criticized the exclusion of pro-Russian parties and limited polling stations in Russia, The Guardian has reported.

The victory boosts Sandu’s EU agenda, though challenges remain, including reforms, economic pressures, and the unresolved issue of Transnistria.
