2 Samuel 11:1-12:14, Then It Happened – You Are the Man

King David stays in Jerusalem as he sends his army to battle against the Ammonites. “Then it happened one evening that David … saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold (2 Samuel 11:2 NKJV). David learns that she is Bathsheba, the wife of one of his warriors who is away in the war, and commits adultery with her. When Bathsheba becomes pregnant, David tries to cover up his sin. God sends the prophet Nathan to confront David using a parable. Incensed by the story, David exclaims that the man in the parable should die. “Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man” (2 Samuel 12:7 NKJV)! In humility, David cries out for and receive God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Although David confessed his sin and received God’s forgiveness, the consequences of his sins were many, severe, and persisted for the remainder of his life and reign. Pastor Kevin exhorts believers to recognize and resist the temptations that we all experience in order to spare the personal suffering that inevitably follows as well as the damage we do to God’s name and reputation. On this Communion Sunday, Pastor Kevin encourages us to reflect on and give thanks for all that He has done in forgiving us our sin.
Maranatha!
