LAPD officers shoots suspect after 911 call of a man pointing a replica firearm at passing vehicles

Arleta, CA - Los Angeles police Wednesday released the name of an officer who shot and wounded a suspect who allegedly pointed what turned out to be a replica firearm at passing vehicles on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Arleta.

The shooting happened about 5:15 p.m. Thursday near Branford Street and Arleta Avenue after officers responded to reports of an armed man pointing a gun at motorists, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Multiple callers reported that the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Lorenzo Sandoval, was walking along Arleta Avenue, pointing a gun at passing vehicles,” according to an LAPD statement. “Officers located Sandoval walking south on the west sidewalk of Arleta Avenue, armed with a firearm in his right hand. The officers issued commands for Sandoval to drop the weapon, which he ignored and continued to walk away.”

A help call was generated after officers radioed in their location and the situation, prompting a response from bordering LAPD divisions, whose personnel helped monitor Sandoval, police said.

“Suddenly, Sandoval turned and faced the officers while armed, resulting in an officer-involved shooting,” police said. “Sandoval was struck by gunfire, fell to the ground, and was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound and cleared for booking.”

The officer who shot Sandoval was identified as Officer Jacob Sanchez.

“A replica handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence,” according to the LAPD, whose Force Investigation Division personnel are investigating the shooting.
