Shutdown Nears | Trump, Democrats Clash on Health Care

The U.S. government shutdown threat is intensifying, and health care is now at the center of the battle. President Donald Trump has warned that without agreement on funding, the government may shut down, accusing Democrats of pushing costly health care provisions that he calls “unfunded mandates.”

At stake are billions in Affordable Care Act subsidies and Medicaid support, programs that Democrats argue are essential to protect millions of Americans. House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have vowed not to back down, demanding these protections be guaranteed in any spending deal.

Republicans, however, say these debates should not derail the urgent need to pass a stopgap measure to keep the government open. House Speaker Mike Johnson insists health care subsidies should be debated separately, not tied to shutdown negotiations.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been accused of using “backdoor cuts” by holding back already approved funding for health and education, raising concerns about executive overreach and fiscal maneuvering.

If Congress fails to reach an agreement, the consequences could be severe: furloughed federal workers, disrupted programs, and permanent cuts to key services. The standoff underscores the deep partisan divide over health care and spending priorities.
