The Dad Discount: Why Are Fathers The Punchline In Parenting?

Let’s talk about the parenting double standard.
We celebrate Mother’s Day with heartfelt tributes and endless praise for the emotional labor. We celebrate Father’s Day with a funny meme about a BBQ and a cheap tie.
A mother feeds her child? She's nurturing.
A father feeds his child? He's "babysitting" or "giving Mom a break."
If a father forgets one school event, he’s a deadbeat. If a mother does, she’s "overwhelmed" and "needs support." If we’re involved, we’re praised for doing the bare minimum; if we're not, the assumption is we simply don't care.
The narrative that dads are either incompetent or just glorified helpers is outdated, insulting, and dismisses the millions of fathers who are actively, emotionally, and financially invested in their kids' lives. We’re not just the fun parent or the wallet. We are committed co-parents.
It's time to retire the "Dad Joke" stereotype and recognize the real, often invisible, labor fathers put in. We deserve the same respect, not the short end of the stick.
