The Most Scenic, High Elevation Road in the West: Beartooth Highway

The Beartooth Hwy winds back and forth across the border between Wyoming and Montana. Located just east of Yellowstone, this beautiful highway is mostly over 9000 feet above sea level and has some of the most stunning vistas anywhere. Accessible only during May thru September, depending on snow, it will take your breath away. This was an early September visit and the weather was perfect. Generally considered to be the 64 mile road (US 212) between Cooke City and Red Lodge, Montana (which will take you all day), it dips into Wyoming for much of the way. EXTREMELY LIMITED FACILITIES along the way; make sure you have enough fuel to make the trip. This one requires some good planning because there is only one road to Cooke City from the west.
