Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside in the United States to honour the priesthood and recognize the dedicated service of priests in the Church. It is part of the US Council of Serra International’s efforts to foster vocations and show appreciation for clergy.
When is it celebrated?
It is observed on the last Sunday of September each year.
In 2025, Priesthood Sunday will be on September 28, 2025.
Purpose
To encourage Catholics to express gratitude for their priests through prayers, letters, parish events, and acts of appreciation.
To remind the faithful of the gift of the priesthood in the celebration of the Eucharist, the sacraments, and pastoral care.
To inspire young people to consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Ways to Celebrate
Pray for priests by name during Mass or in parish bulletins.
Organize a parish appreciation event (breakfast, lunch, or reception).
Write personal notes or cards of thanks.
Encourage priestly vocations with catechesis and youth engagement.
Priesthood Sunday is an invitation to thank God for the gift of priests and to pray for their ongoing holiness, strength, and joy in their vocation.
What Must We Do for Our Priests?
Our beloved priests are chosen by God to guide souls, offer sacrifice, and serve the Church with love and dedication. In these challenging times, we are called to support them with unwavering faith and devotion.
We Must Do Three Things:
1. Offer Holy Mass and Pray the Rosary for Priests — Every Day
The Holy Eucharist and the Rosary are the most powerful spiritual weapons. By offering them daily for our priests, we strengthen their mission and surround them with divine protection and grace.
2. Live in Holiness and Humility
Let us stop sinning and choose the narrow path of virtue. By leading a quiet life, rooted in humility, we become living examples of Christ’s peace and purity. Our holiness uplifts our priests.
3. Trust in God’s Faithfulness
He who called them will never abandon them. Christ Himself helps them carry their cross. But we are called to help too—through our encouraging words, acts of kindness, and by living a life that inspires hope.
🕊️ Why Do We Pray for Priests?
“To be a priest is not to escape suffering—it is to offer it for others.”
The Call to Support Our Shepherds
Priests carry the immense responsibility of leading souls to Christ. They administer the sacraments, preach the Gospel, and intercede for us daily. Yet behind the collar, many endure loneliness, spiritual battles, and silent suffering.
To Be a Priest, You Must Suffer
“The priesthood is not comfort—it’s sacrifice.”
Many holy men have reminded us: the priest shares in Christ’s suffering. The more deeply he loves his flock, the more he lays down his life in service and prayer.
