Revealing a HIDDEN Vineyard Oasis in Arizona
Colibri Vineyard in southeastern Arizona is a hidden wine oasis tucked into the wild folds of the Chiricahua Mountains. Volcanic soils, punishing sun, and canyon winds have conspired to create wines that are rugged, untamed, and unforgettable. Just steps away sits the Colibri House, an off-grid Airbnb guesthouse where mornings begin with birdsong and evenings close under skies so dark and thick with stars it feels like stepping back in time. This is not Napa. This is not Bordeaux. This is Arizona wine at its wildest and most authentic.
The name itself carries weight. Colibri means hummingbird in Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. And the name is no accident. Over fourteen species of hummingbirds call Whitetail Canyon home, one of the highest concentrations anywhere in Arizona. These tiny creatures flash across the vineyard like living jewels, symbols of joy, energy, and rebirth. They share the land with Gould’s turkeys, deer, foxes, and the occasional coatimundi. On the wraparound porch, a glass of Syrah in hand, the desert suddenly reveals itself for what it is. Fierce. Fragile. Full of improbable life.
Planted in 2000 on the bones of an old apple orchard, Colibri Vineyard is perched at 5,200 feet on rhyolitic soils that echo the famous Rhône site of Hermitage. Its nine acres are devoted to Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Roussanne, Picpoul Blanc, Gamay, and even Marsanne grafted on ancient Viognier vines. These grapes carry spice, austerity, and a wild desert edge that is pure Arizona. Once harvested, the fruit is driven straight to Page Springs Cellars, where founder and winemaker Eric Glomski has spent years shaping Colibri’s character into bottles that tell a story few ever expected from this state. He didn’t plant the vineyard, but his connection to it is undeniable. It’s become one of the crown jewels of his winemaking portfolio.
Page Springs Cellars itself is the beating heart of Arizona’s modern wine movement. Known for Rhône varietals and a dedication to sustainability, it has proven that this land, often dismissed as barren, can produce wines of elegance and intensity. Glomski and his team have made Page Springs into a rallying point, showing that Arizona wine isn’t just possible. It can stand shoulder to shoulder with wines from the world’s most celebrated regions. Colibri represents one of the boldest expressions of that truth.
The Colibri House, connected to the vineyard, is more than a guesthouse. It’s an experience. Two bedrooms, one bathroom, a modern kitchen, and a wide porch built for lingering. Cook your own meals. Share a bottle made from grapes grown just outside the door. If the season is right, you might even pick grapes alongside Eric and his crew, then sit down to a feast as he pours Colibri wines and tells stories only a lifetime among vines can produce.
There’s no velvet rope here, no curated luxury. What you’ll find instead is honesty. Silence thick enough to hear your own heartbeat. The smell of desert dust and fermenting grapes. Nights that end with constellations overhead and mornings where hummingbirds greet the day before you do.
Colibri Vineyard is not about convenience or glamour. It is about the raw and improbable beauty of wine grown on the edge of the possible. For those who make the trek, it is more than just a vineyard stay. It is a place where land, life, and spirit collide.
