If Stan Lee's evaluation of The Scarlet Pimpernel rings true, then it stands to reason that the Pimpernel deserves a worthy arch enemy, one who torments and counters his heroic acts at every turn.
Baroness Orczy gives Sir Percy Blakeney such an opposite in Citoyen Chauvelin. A man dedicated to the French Revolution down to its bloody roots, Chauvelin mercilessly tracks, taunts and threatens Blakeney's beloved Marguerite going so far as to blackmail her.
His loyalty to France is above all else even reason, and he stops at nothing to prove it and bring glory to the Revolution.
Surely, as Lee might say, he's very much the Joker to Blakeney's Batman.
