You ever get the beats in your feets? In 1984, one movie did that to the whole world and it was very unexpected. That movie launched the career of its star, Kevin Bacon, into the stratosphere and its soundtrack became iconic. That movie is the original “Footloose.” It tells the story of Ren McCormack, a big city high school kid coming to a small town in Utah where dancing is outlawed. He, nor the audience, can barely believe it. However he’s eventually highly motivated to convince the town, most notably the town reverend, Reverend Shaw, played by John Lithgow, to allow dancing. The reverend lost his son in a drunken car accident when they were returning home from some partying and dancing and that’s why he’s against dancing. It doesn’t help that Ren has attracted the attention of the reverend’s daughter and they start up a romance. She, along with Ren’s best friend Willard and his girlfriend, still fight for the right to dance all to some massive hit songs from a classic soundtrack. In this episode, I’m all talk and no dance moves, and you’ll thank me for that, as I talk this hallmark from the 80s. “Footloose” also stars Lori Singer, Chris Penn, Dianne Wiest, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Laughlin, Elizabeth Gorcey, Frances Lee McCain, Jim Youngs, Douglas Dirkson, Lynne Marta, Arthur Roseberg and Timothy Scott.
