Arborists, Norm Oberson and Kris Olsen, and Jillian Maguire of the Stanley Park Preservation Society spoke with CTV reporter Andrew Johnson questioning why a 400-year-old Douglas Fir tree was cut down at the end of August, 2025. Norm and Kris demonstrate sounding a tree and show how core samples are taken to determine the extent of rot. In this case the dead standing tree appeared to be sound, and could have continued to serve as a valuable wildlife tree for many years.
