Violent protests over persistent power outages and water shortages erupted in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, on Thursday (September 25). Thousands of angry protesters defied a government ban on demonstrations, attempting to reach a planned meeting point and clashing with police. The situation quickly devolved into chaos, with protesters blocking roads with burning tires and rocks, and even attacking the homes of politicians close to President Andry Rajoelina. Anti-riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, arresting at least three people, but looting and arson were also reported. Authorities had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and closed schools in the capital to restore order.
