Does Trump Control Europe_ _ Dave Keating

Why did the EU give in to Trump over tariffs? And what does this tell us about the real state of relations between the United States and the European Union? The relationship between the United States and Europe remains one of the most critical and complicated in international politics. On the surface, they are allies as integral parts of the West. But beneath it, things are far more complicated. While the United States is the claer military power, the EU often portrays itself as an economic powerhouse. However, the so-called "Brussels Effect", which sees the EU dominate global business regulation, gives Europe less of an edge over the US than it may seem. America and Europe remain competitors in key economic areas, with Trump's tariffs exacerbating ties even further, while diverging EU-US political outlooks continue to generate friction. The second Trump administration has amplified many of these differences, reshaping debates over NATO, tariffs, and sovereignty, against the escalating danger to the Continent of the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.

In this interview with journalist and commentator Dave Keating, we discuss how the US perceives Europe, how Europeans understand America, and the future of this partnership in the long term. We explore Europe’s continuing reliance on US financial and security structures, the lack of a concrete EU strategy for independence from America, and the growing uncertainty fuelled by the rise of the MAGA movement, which poses a direct threat to Europe’s geographic integrity. With the power balances between this relationship continuing to shift: can Europe redefine itself as a genuinely autonomous actor, or will transatlantic ties continue to dictate the Continent’s path?
