Many on the right see this as more than a mere anecdote. “When you play with spiritual forces, even jokingly, you cross a very dangerous line,” Kelly said, noting that Charlie and his wife Erika took the threat seriously and turned to a Catholic priest friend for prayer and protection.

Candace Owens provided context. She acknowledged that it’s possible those involved believed they were being clever or funny by ordering such rituals without understanding the spiritual dimension many believers consider real. “It’s like when Vice used to do weird experiments and publish them: they think it’s a joke, but they’re contacting people who take this stuff seriously,” she noted.

What some saw as humor, others experienced as genuine distress. Erika Kirk, a devout Christian, was deeply shaken by news of the alleged curses. According to Kelly, the couple prayed with a priest and cited the biblical teaching that “weapons will form but will not prosper.” “That’s Satan, and those witches have no power,” Charlie reportedly said.
