We have already covered the period of church history called "infancy" from AD33-500. In that section we looked at the issue of Israel and the church, authority, canonicity, Christology, Pneumatology, and Trinity. Christ was busying teaching His church for the first 500 eyars. Tomorrow we will move into the period of church history we might call "childhood," which will cover from AD500-1400. We learn that allegorical interpretation is a stumbling block to learning and that Christ obviously wants to teach by His Spirit, but if people insist on not approaching His word in a literal (ordinary and figurative language) sense then they are unteachable. There are some consequences to allegorical interpretation that we should learn from. Despite this, there is one important area of development that came through Anselm and somewhat through Abelard and this regards Christ's work of atonement. For over 1,000 years the reigning theory was that Christ paid a ransom to the devil. Anselm broke from this saying that Christ didn't owe anything to the devil. There are issues in God's just nature that must be resolved for Him to save us. We will review and work our way into this important period. See the attachment.

Blessings and love to you,
Jeremy
