The 1940 German film Jud Süß (Jew Süss) is based on the true story of the 18th-century court Jew Joseph Süß Oppenheimer. It was one of the most successful films produced by the Nazi regime, directed by Veit Harlan at the request of Joseph Goebbels.

PLOT SUMMARY:

Rise to Power: The film portrays Joseph Süß Oppenheimer (Jud Süß) as a cunning and ambitious Jewish businessman who uses his wealth to manipulate his way into a position of authority. He provides lavish gifts and loans to the Duke of Württemberg, Karl Alexander, who is constantly frustrated by the local council limiting his power. Süß quickly becomes the Duke's chief financial advisor.

Corruption and Exploitation: Süß exploits his power by levying oppressive taxes, tolls, and duties, enriching himself and the Duke while causing great suffering for the German populace. He also convinces the Duke to repeal a long-standing law prohibiting Jews from living in Württemberg, leading to a large influx of Jews who further prey on the local population.

Rape and Murder: Süß, having shed his traditional Jewish appearance for elegant "German" attire to better blend in, lusts after the beautiful "Aryan" daughter of a chief minister, Dorothea Sturm. When she rejects his advances, he abducts and brutally rapes her. Driven by shame and grief, Dorothea commits suicide by drowning herself.

Downfall and Execution: Dorothea's death sparks a popular revolt against Süß and the Duke's rule. Süß is arrested, condemned to death and publicly hanged in an iron cage, and an edict is passed expelling all Jews from the city.
