Hakeem Jeffries: "Republicans have clearly demonstrated that they want to shut down the government.

Throughout this process, a deliberate decision was made by Republican leadership in the House and in the Senate to not have a single conversation with Democrats. They’re not even pretending that they want to find common ground.

Donald Trump accepted our request on Saturday to hold a meeting in the Oval Office to try to avoid a government shutdown. The meeting was scheduled for later on Monday that week, and then Donald Trump wakes up Tuesday morning, launches an unhinged attack, and cancels the meeting. Why? Because he doesn’t want to discuss the Republican health care crisis, and they have decided to shut down the government.

And on top of all that, Mike Johnson cancels the votes that were scheduled for the following Tuesday and Monday. In a direct step toward an imminent government shutdown, he decides there’s no need for us to be in town.

I mean, all of this is outrageous and points to one thing: Republicans have decided to shut down the government."

President Trump on the Democrats trying to force a government shutdown:

"Well, all of this is caused by the Democrats. They asked us to do something totally unreasonable. They never change. They want to give money away to illegals, illegally, to people who entered our country illegally. They want to give an enormous amount of federal money.

And we don’t want to do that because it would mean everyone would just keep coming back in mass. Right now, we have absolutely perfect borders, like you haven’t seen in many years, even better than what I had during my four years. But these borders are completely closed. Now you can only enter our country legally, but the Democrats want to give it all away. They also want to reopen the borders.

Look at that big issue. They want to open the borders again after everything we’re going through now: getting rid of prisoners, getting rid of all these people released from mental institutions, drug dealers, drug addicts, everything they were putting into our country. It’s all ended now. But this is what Schumer wants. This is what the Democrats want.

They want to take our money. We’re doing well because of tariffs. We’re doing unbelievably well. We’re making more money than ever…"
