4 Where he never knelt (the Jewish people), in that place he will be a prisoner (they would be taken captive), and in that place they will fall slain; despite all this, HIS (GOD’s) anger has not turned away, and HIS hand is still outstretched (punishment is coming).
The condemnation of those using political power to write laws that hurt the poor and needy is unmistakable. These politicians were writing or expanding the laws to put what little the orphans and widows had in their own pockets. After all they (the widows and orphans) were unable to fight back. Isaiah is clear that the LORD’s judgment is coming for them, along with everyone else.
Despite all of their brutal ferocity, the Assyrians were not the primary problem for Israel and Judah. It was the LORD whose anger remained unsatisfied at their sin. HIS outstretched arm was the one punishing HIS own people through the Assyrians.
The coming of the Assyrian army is imminent, and their fate (these leaders) will be the same as everyone else… Either they will be among the captives, or their bodies will piled up with the other dead. The Assyrian kings were famous for beheading the bodies of their victims and stacking them to emphasize the utter defeat of their enemies.
Those who held power are asked to whom they will turn for help and where their wealth will end up. A fair warning for those who do the same today. Whether in business or politics. GOD cares for the widows and orphans and the poor. NOT the lazy, but the truly needy.
Isaiah leaves no room for doubt the depth of the anger of GOD. It is their faithlessness that has provoked HIM to send the Assyrians to nearly wipe HIS people out. The LORD goes as far as to say HE will allow the Assyrian king to take spoils from Israel. The LORD pictures the streets of Israel as thick with the remains of the people as the Assyrian war machine treads over their decaying remains.
9-11 Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus? As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samariashall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’ ”
LXX 10:8-11, And if they should say to him, Thou alone art ruler; then shall he say, Have I not taken the country above Babylon and Calneh, where the tower was built…?and have I [not] taken Arabia, and Damascus, and Samaria? As I have taken them, I will also take all the kingdoms: howl, ye idols in Jerusalem, and in Samaria. For as I did to Samaria and her idols, so will I do also to Jerusalem and her idols.
