Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, USA. According to the 2020 census, its population was 69,093, making it the eleventh most populous city in Indiana in 2021. The city has historically been dominated by large-scale industrial activity. It is home to the American steel company U.S. Steel with its Gary Works steel mill, a large metallurgical complex in North America. Gary is located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. The city is the western gateway to Indiana Dunes National Park and is within the Greater Chicago area.
The city was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, founder of the United States Steel Corporation. U.S. Steel founded the city in 1906 as a factory town to serve its steel mills. Like other cities in the Rust Belt, Gary's once-thriving steel industry has suffered significantly from the loss of local manufacturing jobs since the 1970s.
As a result of this economic shift, the city's population has declined sharply by 61% since 1960. Due to its large population decline and economic deterioration, the city is often cited as an example of deindustrialization and urban decay in America.
