Caracas, Sept 24, 2025: A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Venezuela’s Zulia province on Tuesday evening, with tremors felt across Colombia and the Caribbean islands.

The quake’s epicentre was about 24 km east-northeast of Mene Grande (Zulia) at a shallow depth of 7.8 km. Strong tremors shook Maracaibo, Caracas, Cúcuta, and Bucaramanga, forcing people to evacuate homes and buildings.

CCTV footage from a grocery shop in Zulia — showing shelves rattling and customers rushing out in panic — has gone viral on social media. Other videos captured falling household items, families fleeing homes, and damage to historic sites like Maracaibo’s Santa Bárbara Church.

Officials said around 2.3 lakh residents near the epicentre experienced strong to very strong shaking. However, there are no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage, and authorities confirmed there was no tsunami risk.

Two aftershocks — magnitudes 3.9 and 5.4 — were also recorded in Zulia and Barinas states. Assessments are ongoing, particularly in heritage structures across Maracaibo.

Northwestern Venezuela, lying close to active tectonic boundaries, remains prone to seismic activity — posing risks to both residents and the country’s oil-rich infrastructure.
