On Wednesday, President Ahmed al-Sharaa will become the first Syrian leader to address the United Nations in almost six decades.
Israel is conducting regular strikes and maintaining military outposts inside Syria, violating a 1974 agreement. It also controls a significant portion of shared water sources. The Syrian government, led by President al-Sharaa, faces a difficult balancing act; it seeks international recognition and economic support but must contend with a population and hardline factions strongly opposed to Israel, particularly due to the war in Gaza. While there may be external pressure for a diplomatic agreement, any overtures are complicated by internal anger and complex regional relationships with powers like Russia and Turkiye. The situation remains tense and deeply complicated.
