7 Kids + Mom Try Unique Camping Under a Bridge 😳 | Day 39

Day 39 on our Mississippi River Adventure gave us foggy bluffs, sand dunes, Lock 5… and one of our strangest camps yet.

The morning started in Wabasha, where locals had treated us like family. Then we paddled into wide water with stunning bluffs on both sides, which were some of the most beautiful terrain we’ve seen. We passed through Lock & Dam 5, shared the chamber with ferries and houseboats, and finally gave the kids their dream stop: climbing and tumbling across giant sand dunes built from dredged river sand.

Later, our friend Drew rejoined us on the water, bringing more of the “river magic” that keeps this journey special.

But the ending? Unexpected. Our planned site didn’t work out, so we set up camp on a sandbar under a bridge in Winona, MN. With a firepit, trains overhead, and kids swimming at sunset, it turned into one of our most memorable camps yet.

We’re a family of one single mother, Smoky, and seven outdoor boys and girls canoeing 2,350 miles down the Mississippi River. Follow along for every challenge, surprise, and unforgettable night.
