Hello everyone, welcome back to another challenging and risky treatment mission carried out in the deep forest.
This mission was really dangerous because the officials had to carry out all the necessary treatment steps and investigations for a young and highly aggressive tusker living within a massive herd of nearly 300 elephants.

The injured elephant was first noticed a few days ago by wildlife conservation officials during their routine health inspection of the herd.

While many elephants separate from their herd when they are injured, this elephant has remained with its group.

According to their investigation, this injury on the tusker’s body may have been caused either by contact with a sharp object in the forest or by the tusk of another elephant during a confrontation.

The challenging natural behavior and the daily interactions between wild animals in the forest are undoubtedly to blame for this.

The officials knew that the elephant needed urgent medical attention. So, after monitoring its behaviour and movements for days, they were finally able to begin their treatment mission.

02.30 - 03.55

They have been waiting patiently for the best time to isolate the elephant from its herd and sedate it without the distraction of the other herd elephants.

A skilled officer administered the necessary dosage of anesthetic drugs using a tranquilizer gun.

The necessary dosage of the anesthetic drug was decided by the veterinary doctor based on the body weight, the health condition, and the strength level of the animal.
The sedation process was really challenging with the presence of the other elephants and the aggressive behaviour of the injured elephant.

Handling an elephant like this, especially one living as part of a large wild herd, can be extremely challenging for the officials involved.
There are incidents where some officials have even lost their lives when interacting with these wild animals. Yet these officials are ready to face any challenge to save the lives of poor wild animals.

03.55 - 05.15

Now the gentle giant is fully sedated after about 15 minutes. An official gently taps the elephant to confirm that the elephant is sedated.

These animals are unaware that the officials are there to help them and relieve their pain, so their natural instinct is to defend themselves and sometimes even try to attack anyone who comes too close. That is why an official covers its eyes with a cloth to make sure that the elephant doesn’t see the movements of the officials.

05.15 - 07.40

Now, after confirming that the elephant is fully sedated, it is time to treat the wound.

Based on the majority of our viewers' requests, we have added the step-by-step procedure of treating the wound on the elephant to the video.
This wound treatment procedure is shown purely for educational purposes and to help raise awareness about wildlife rescue efforts and veterinary care.

Let's learn how to treat the gunshot wound that has resulted in a huge abscess.

"Please note, the following footage shows a real medical procedure on the elephant’s injured leg. While it’s an important part of the healing process, some viewers may find it sensitive, so feel free to skip ahead if you feel uncomfortable."

As the first step, the abscess was cleaned using saline solution and cotton.

Then the officials continued the cleaning process. Hydrogen peroxide, which is a disinfectant solution, was then injected into the abscess using a syringe to remove any of the pus, maggots, and necrotic tissues from the infected area.

At the same time, the doctor and the other officials carry out the injection process. Antibiotics, multivitamins, painkillers, and anti-inflammatory drugs are administered intramuscularly. The dosages of this medicine are determined by the veterinary doctor based on the body weight and the health condition of the animal.

Even though the injured tusker is totally sedated, the rest of the herd poses a significant risk to officials. As you can see, the team stands around the injured elephant, carefully guiding the other herd members away so that the treatment can continue safely.

They toss firecrackers at the elephants and shout to scare them away.

07.40 - 08.28

Let’s get back to the wound treatment. The abscess is cleaned with saline solution once again.

After cleaning the wound completely, as the final step, a solution of povidone-iodine and negasunt powder is injected into the wound.

08.28 - 10.43

Then, more povidone-iodine and negasunt powder mixture is applied onto the treated abscess.

Now that the treatment is completed, the revival drug is injected to regain consciousness.

Bearing every risk and challenge, the officials and the veterinary doctor were able to complete the process safely.

That has brought us to the end of this mission.

Thank you for hanging on til the end. We thank all of our viewers, veterinary officials, wildlife conservation officials, the experienced veterinary doctor, and all the others who were involved.

This treatment session would cure the young tusker completely.
