A 21-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after a late-night shooting

A 21-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after a late-night shooting injured three people during a large gathering on Indianapolis’s northwest side.

Around 11:30 p.m. on September 20, gunfire erupted in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 5600 block of Georgetown Road, near West 56th Street. The incident occurred during a car show-style gathering outside a Jimmy John’s restaurant, drawing a large crowd.

According to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, surveillance video shows Carlos Contreras, 21, stepping out of a black Dodge Challenger and firing into the crowd with a Glock pistol modified with an illegal “switch,” a device that converts a handgun into a fully automatic weapon. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots.

Contreras then retrieved a Draco AK-style pistol from his vehicle and fired additional rounds at victims already on the ground. Three people—a woman with a leg wound and two men with multiple torso wounds—were rushed to hospitals. All survived. A fourth individual suffered minor injuries in the chaos.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers quickly located the vehicle and pursued it until it became stuck on railroad tracks near Industrial Boulevard. Contreras was arrested without further incident and taken to Eskenazi Hospital for crash-related injuries. Officers recovered two firearms from the car, including the modified Glock.

On September 23, prosecutors charged Contreras with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a machine gun, criminal recklessness, and resisting law enforcement.
