A new national survey reveals a sharp drop in public support for former President Donald Trump’s leadership. Conducted in mid-September, the Washington Post–Ipsos poll finds that most Americans now disapprove of Trump’s handling of three critical issues: crime, the economy, and his overall job performance.

According to the poll, 54 percent of respondents say they disapprove of the way Trump is managing crime, while only 44 percent approve. The numbers on the economy are even more striking—59 percent disapprove of his approach to economic policy, with just 40 percent offering approval. Overall, 56 percent of Americans rate Trump’s job performance as poor, compared to 43 percent who support him.

These results cut across party lines. Independents, a key voting bloc, express strong dissatisfaction, citing rising prices, tariff impacts, and concerns about public safety. Many say they want Democrats to retain control of Congress to provide a check on Trump’s influence.

Historically, Republicans have claimed strength on issues like the economy and crime, yet this survey suggests the tide may be turning. Analysts warn that these numbers could have serious implications for Trump’s political standing and for upcoming 2026 midterm races.
