San Francisco Bay Area jolted awake by 4.3 magnitude earthquake

A moderate 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area early Monday, centered just east-southeast of Berkeley.

The quake occurred shortly before 3 a.m. and was felt widely across the region.

No injuries or major structural damage were reported, though some businesses experienced broken windows and fallen merchandise.

BART trains ran with delays for several hours as safety inspections were conducted, returning to normal service by midday.

Residents as far as Salinas, about 100 miles away, reported feeling the shaking.

News anchor Dave Clark described being caught off guard by the quake in his newsroom, the Associated Press has reported.

The USGS noted that the last similar quake near Berkeley was a 4.4 magnitude event on January 4, 2018.
