Columbus, OH - The Columbus Division of Police released body camera video showing the moments leading up to a man getting shot by an officer after fleeing a traffic stop on the southeast side Friday evening.

Officers were called around 5:05 p.m. to the area of Burstock Road and Frebis Avenue for a traffic stop. At this time, it's unclear why officers initially conducted the traffic stop.

The driver refused to stop for the officers, Sgt. James Fuqua said in a press conference on Friday. The officers then followed the vehicle to the 1400 block of Burstock Road.

Bodycam video shows an officer locating the vehicle parked between two apartment buildings. Then, one officer in the cruiser is heard saying, “They’re bailing.”

The officer driving immediately jumped out of the cruiser and began chasing a man through yards in the area.

After chasing the man for about 20 seconds, the officer yelled out to the man, “Let me see your f***ing hands. I will shoot you.”

The officer then spoke into his radio, saying, “he’s got a gun.”

“Drop the gun,” the officer yelled to the man while still running. He repeated himself once, then again said, “I will shoot you, drop the gun.”

The man is seen tripping and falling to the ground, then immediately standing back up and looking back at the officer.

According to Fuqua, the man had the gun in his hand at this time. The video also appears to show the man with an object in his hand.

As the man started to run again, the officer fired five shots at him, hitting him. Police said he was shot twice in the leg.

The suspect, identified as Deontis Williams-Spencer, was taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers or civilians were injured.

Fuqua said the gun was recovered.

According to Fuqua, a passenger was in the vehicle during the traffic stop but complied with police.

Williams-Spencer was charged with obstructing official business and aggravated menacing.
