Riots erupted in Italy on Monday over Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s refusal to recognize Palestinian state. Tens of thousands of people protested across the country as part of a day of action dubbed "denounce the genocide in Gaza". In northern Milan, where organisers said 50,000 people turned out, police used tear gas to disperse protesters near the train station, while demonstrators threw stones at the security forces. The protesters burned a US flag. Some 20,000 people gathered in Rome, shouting "Free Palestine!" and holding up Palestinian flags. In Bologna, over 10,000 protesters took to the streets, blocking the motorway before being dispersed by water cannons. The protests came on the same day as a number of countries are preparing to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, following recognition by the UK, Australia and Canada on Sunday. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has announced it will not recognise a Palestinian state for now.
