BACKGROUND PAPER ON WHY I SERVE
1. When I think back recounting the earliest times of my military service, what strikes me most is just how much time has gone by (over 30 years). From my humble beginnings serving in the United States Navy, attending numerous schools, Aviation Ordnance, Special Weapons, and EOD. These schools established the basis for my career but following this would be the most physically and mentally challenging part of my military career to date.
2. “BUDS”, good ole San Diego, California was to be my home for many months. Preparation for this endeavor was a major challenge and quite frankly the best thing I could do to set the stage for everything I would be challenged with both in my ongoing military and civilian career path. Each person makes choices, but boy, the things I did in training and beyond “BUDS” I can never forget. The things I have done, the people I worked with, and literally, the hundreds of countries I have officially and unofficially been to, some many times.
3. Daily at NCOA, I listen to classmates talk about their experiences overseas, and each and every story I hear, I can relate and sit back and listen to their words. It takes me back to those moments to many good times and honestly, I try not to show it but from time to time, it does bring back some very disturbing memories of things I have seen and been directly involved in.
4. I am humble and do not like talking about myself nor do I want praise or anyone to feel sorry for me. Honestly, I will say this for the record as I was asked to write this because others want to hear my story. Humbly, many fellow operators I had the honor of serving beside are no longer with us. They died by my side, not once, but I have experienced over and over firsthand, what combat can do to human beings. This folks, is something I hope to God nobody else must ever experience, but unfortunately, that is what Navy Seals deal with. I have been shot numerous times, stabbed, shrap metal riddled, finger blown off, mangled, my throat cut by shrapnel, you name it, I have felt it.
5. 4 Purple Hearts and 2 Silver Stars later. For the record to be clear, my very last engagement, my unit was ambushed, five team members were killed, had another next to me shot through the stomach, my left hand thumb blown off, shot through my backside, taking fire, At this time, 9 Taliban could be heard coming towards our position to claim their prize, but I had other plans for them. I stood up and at point blank range, shot all 9 of those guys as fast as I could and as I am here before you today, I was the last man standing out of that fight.
6. I miss my teammates; I was to be awarded the Medal of Honor for the act but refused to accept that because of the loss and honor for my teammates. I accepted the Silver Star for this. Honestly, I take my service then and now very seriously. Pretty medals and ribbons are great, but not something I need to have or flaunt. It is my dedication to my duty, my service, my country and that is why when given the chance to continue, I moved to the US Air Force side. Now, as an Aircraft Structural Technician, I get to work on aircraft, my true love and passion.
7. In fact, most recently being selected by my base commander in Youngstown where I am an Air Force Traditional Reservist for the “Beyond the Uniform” challenge Air Force wide. My story was selected by Air Force Command and will be in numerous Air Force publications in the very near future and on display at the Pentagon for one year. After completion of the NCOA Academy here at Tyndall, Air Force Base, I will return to my duty in Youngstown to serve as my shop’s flight chief and resume my undershirt duties.
8. My next step is to become a First Sergeant for my squadron to do what I feel is going to be my best accomplishment and service to my country to date. This will be my legacy, to serve my country until the very last day I can possibly. I will be 54 years old in July. Honestly, yes, it gets harder to do this, but the professionals that surround me daily along with my wife Alice and our kids give me the courage and strength to stay focused and give my best every day. I am proud and humbled to be here and continue to serve my country with all of you.
