THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART 3) The Post-Pentecost/Pre-Church Age Appeal to Israel
Jesus told His Jewish followers that after His future ascension unto the Father in Heaven that He would send the Holy Spirit in that special capacity unto them and those who came to Him through their testimony… (“Neither pray I for these alone but for them also which shall believe on me through their word…”) There is no controversy or question that this prayer would extend the Holy Spirit’s working in the Earth to whoever believes according to Scripture’s testimony. But the question is… In what capacity is He working to bring that unity for which He prayed to the Father for the redeemed? For some, they would say ‘nothing is needed,’ as if their receiving Him as Savior accomplished this unity… but in context, what the redeemed disciples’ further expressed need was… to abide in Him and be sanctified by the word of truth… by the Spirit of Truth. (John 17:17-20)
Jesus prayed the Holy Spirit would come to them and comfort and advocate for them in His absence, and that the Holy Spirit would bring the things He had spoken in their ears to their remembrance in revelation light of a spiritual baptism… so that they could understand and teach others how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament Scriptures. (As when the Holy Spirit opened the eyes of the two men on the road to Emmaus concerning how Old Testament Scripture spoke of Jesus.) The Holy Spirit would show them “things to come,” in that they would become competent in the Word and teach future believers both the shadow and reality yet to come. The Holy Spirit would supernaturally guide them in spiritual wisdom and understanding in the knowledge of the Word, bringing them into deeper communion faith and fruitfulness, bringing glory to the Father and Son. No doubt the Holy Spirit in a certain capacity worked among the Jews to reveal God’s Kingdom realities for His chosen people and in another capacity the Holy Spirit has for near 2000 years now continually worked among the Gentiles with the coming Kingdom of God in view, generation after generation, and will continue that work “until the fullness of the Gentiles come in/until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” After which Jesus will return and then the Holy Spirit’s work in the Earth will once again turn to Israel (as it did at Pentecost).
In what capacity was the Holy Spirit sent on the Day of Pentecost? It was in an immersion and outpouring of His supernatural power upon the Jewish believers in Christ Jesus. That being in a second ‘appeal’ to the Jews (the first appeal to the Jews being Pre-Crucifixion) in the display of power with signs, wonders, and miracles in order for persistently unbelieving Israel to repent and receive Jesus as their Kingdom Messiah and be water baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the hagion/holy pneuma/spirit. And then in the power of the Holy Spirit, to proclaim Jesus’ sovereignty in the heavens and earth among the Gentile Nations, calling the Gentiles to repentance, unto water baptism and remission of sins in the Name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things Jesus had commanded them. “And they went forth (in their great commission), and preached (that the King and Kingdom of Israel had come) everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following…”
The Father’s testimony again to Israel at Pentecost, Post-Crucifixion, was to the validite Jesus as the Messiah through His Spirit-filled disciples, renewing the claims made before they crucified Him, of His being the Promised Seed, the Son of God, and the Promised One of Deuteronomy 18:18… “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them -- all that I shall command him.” And when Jesus was asked by John if He was the one who was foretold (John wondered because He was focusing only on his circumstance, thinking that if Jesus was Messiah, and the Kingdom of Israel was nigh, why was he being imprisoned?); Jesus, being full of the power of the Holy Spirit replied… “And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached…”
The King and “Kingdom has come nigh unto you” message was preached exclusively to Israel. They were given opportunity to receive this message before His Crucifixion, confirming it by signs, wonders, and miracles in the power of the sinless Son of Man. This appeal of Him being that Promised One to Israel was repeated Post-Crucifixion was now in the power of the resurrected and glorified Son of Man/Son of God Whose selfless Atonement (having been received by the Father) opened the Heavenly door for the sending of the Holy Spirit in a capacity unknown and unimagined unto man. That being by the power of the Holy Spirit, a man’s ‘spirit’ was to be made holy by the impartation of God’s divine nature, wherein resides the possibility of nurturing the willing yielded redeemed unto the “salvation of the soul.” Which is to be realized in their resurrection from among the dead or by being caught up from among the living into the heavenly portion of the Coming Kingdom of Christ, as a new creature to be in spiritual oneness with the Holy Trinity. (1st Peter 1:1-25; 2nd Peter 1:1-11)
The gift of tongues by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost was in answer to Isaiah 28:9-12… “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” And it was also in answer to the Promises to Abraham that his progeny would be a great blessing to the Gentiles (but as it turned out, this advancement to them became their spiritual stumbling block - Verse 13). In that Jews, having believed in Jesus as the Messiah/King of the Kingdom of Israel, would then be able to communicate in the languages of the Gentiles “the wonderful works” of God.
That there is a differentiation between the gift of tongues given by the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, and no doubt thereafter as well, and the gift of tongues that Paul was referring to in 1st Corinthians 14 is clearly seen in that one gift was for a sign to Israel that the Kingdom power of Spirit had come upon them and was directed as a supernatural means by which they could minister effectively and publicly to the Gentiles “…as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.” Whereas the gift of tongues to which Paul was referring to in 1st Corinthians 14 was personal prayer utterance from the redeemed ‘spirit made holy’ that the receiver could later initiate on their own (much more on that matter later).
We certainly know that the Holy Spirit is still working in a New Testament way in the World; both among the lost and the redeemed. Again, it is a question of … in what capacity He is working in supernaturally, not ‘if’ He is working supernaturally. As certainly the New Birth from above wherein the ‘spirit’ of the redeemed is made holy by impartation of the divine eternal nature could be seen as the foremost supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit.
It should be first understood that the Holy Spirit is not working for the same purpose among the Nation of One New Man as He once was among the Jews. In the Gospels, it is recorded that the Jews as a Nation, as prophetically promised, were exclusively being offered the Kingdom authority of God in the Earth (which included a future authority in the Millennial Kingdom’s heavenly part of this Realm… that although began to be revealed by Jesus in the Gospels, yet remained a mystery to them). And once having received Jesus as their Messiah/King, they were then to receive spirits made holy and power gifts from the Holy Spirit, for the purpose of being commissioned and being sent to proselyte, baptize, and teach the Gentiles that the King and Kingdom of Israel had come… inviting them into the commonwealth of Israel. In that the Old Covenant “…decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away” and a New Covenant with Israel is ready to come in. (Hebrew 8:10-13 with Jeremiah 31:31-34)
All Christians should view the entire Book of Acts in the light of it being God’s vain (but foreseen) attempt to fulfill in Israel their promised New Covenant… which was attested to with signs, wonders, and miracles following, to the Jews as testimony of the New Covenant and Kingdom having come unto them. And not only that, but Christian should see and understand the 4 Gospels as being the Holy Spirit’s Written documentation of the Nation of Israel’s rejection of the Messiah/King and Kingdom calling and offering. That offering having been accompanied by Pre-Crucifixion confirming signs, wonders, and miracles to the Jews, of their Messiah/King. And the Christian should then see the Book of Acts as the Holy Spirit’s Written documentation of the Nation of Israel’s rejection of the Messiah/King and Kingdom calling in this second offering, accompanied by Post-Crucifixion confirming signs, wonders, and miracles to the Jews. Then would we redeemed Christians be on more solid ground of understanding for the revelation in the last two parts of the New Testament; the Epistles (all of them) and the King and Kingdom calling on those now redeemed in the ‘Nation of the One New Man’ and the climatic point of all Scripture… the remaining Book of Revelation, the revealing of the King and Kingdom to come. Note the Book of Acts (which documented a period of time of 30 years) divides the 4 Gospels from the Epistles. The Gospels and all of the Book of Acts, until Acts 28:28, was a window of time where the Holy Spirit’s Kingdom work was “unto the Jew first,” and then with Israel’s rejection, the Holy Spirit’s work turned to the Gentiles ‘first’ to attain a people who would be willing to bear the fruits worthy of the inheritance in the Coming heavenly Kingdom of Christ for the next 2000 years. (Matthew 21:43) At the end of those 2000 years, when ‘the fulness of the Gentiles come in,’ the Holy Spirit’s work will include a great work among a remnant of Jews for their attaining that promised Earthly part of the Kingdom of their Messiah.
This work of the Holy Spirit, beginning at Pentecost in 33 AD and suspended in 61AD, recorded in the Book of Acts, should not be seen as having anything to do with the emerging of the Nation of the One New Man, which occurred as a result of what was declared in Acts 28:28. In that the New Testament Gospel (set forth/expounded on in the Epistles and culminating in the Book of Revelation) would distinctly differ… in the first place, that there was to be no differentiation between Jew nor Greek. (Galatians 3:28, Ephesians 2) The supernatural work of the Holy Spirit on display had to do with Israel receiving the offer of the heavenly portion of the future Kingdom of the Messiah, along with the earthly portion already secured by irrevocable promise to Abraham. And when Gentile proselytes began to come into Israel’s commonwealth, and when the power gifts of the Holy Spirit that were to follow, the Jews began to be given by the Holy Spirit to Gentile proselytes (in at least some of the Gentile gatherings)… it was intended to provoke Israel’s leaders to jealousy and to repentance. (Romans 10:19; 1:11,14) Yet, the leaders of Israel continued to refuse their King and Kingdom inheritance.
The early and latter rains of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit of Joel’s prophecy were/are exclusive to the Nation of Israel. (Joel 2) There is no early rain of the Holy Spirit’s power for Christians, nor a latter rain of the Holy Spirit’s power for Christians known to Scripture. Only the Day of Pentecost outpouring of the early rain power of the Holy Spirit upon the Jews by which they then ministered Kingdom understanding to Gentiles for their repentance and water baptism that made them proselytes. That “power from on high” that now comes upon mankind independently from Israel’s past two callings (Pre-Crucifixion and Post-Crucifixion) in the work of the Holy Spirit with the King and Kingdom (the heavenly portion) in view, now predominantly among the Gentiles in the earth, unchanged for the last 2000 years. The latter rain of the Holy Spirit will come upon repentant Israel’s remnant at the Return of Jesus to the Earth. (Joel 2, Zechariah 12-14)
What should be readily distinguishable in Scripture in the Book of Acts is the clear transferring of the offering of the Kingdom of heavens to the Gentiles. What is also noticeable is that signs, wonders, and miracles were becoming less a part of the work of the Holy Spirit, now moving away from the Post-crucifixion offering of the Kingdom to the Jews to the Nation of the One New Man. The Book of Acts giving the history over that time period from 33 AD until Paul’s quote of Acts 28:28… declared by the Holy Spirit a few days after Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome… which defined and closed the Book in 61 AD. The rejection of the Jewish leaders in Rome of the Post-Crucifixion offering was the cutting off of Israel from the heavenly portion of the inheritance of the Kingdom and the deferring of their earthly inheritance until after the calling out of a people from among the Gentiles, a people willing to be transformed in worthiness to inherit Israel’s lost heavenly portion of Christ’s coming Millennial Kingdom.
1st Corinthians was written around 57 AD, around 4 years earlier than the time of cutting off of Israel recorded in the Book of Acts. It was from 58 AD-68 AD that Galatians, Romans, 1st Peter, 2nd Peter, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, 1st Timothy and 2nd Timothy were written. It should be noted that the same supernatural signs, wonders, and miracles contributed to the gifts of the power of the Holy Spirit referred to in the Corinthian Church are remarkably not mentioned at all in any of these later letters… nor when Jesus addressed the 7 Churches in the first 3 Chapters of the Book of Revelation.
This not to say gifts or manifestations of the power of the Holy Spirit ceased. For among other evidences, they are attested to by the Church ‘fathers’ {Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Tertullian, and others} over the next 300 years (not to mention the testimony of millions of Christians over these additional 1700 years). But those signs, wonders, and miracles following Christ’s Jewish disciples, that would have legitimized their testimony related to Israel’s having repented and accepted their King and Kingdom calling, would by absolute necessity have to cease with Israel’s rejection in Acts 28:28.
After Acts 28:28 (Israel’s final rejection), those Jewish Apostles, those Jewish disciples, the Gentile proselytes, now all would become immediate citizens of the newly formed ‘Nation of the One New Man’ (of whom Christ spoke in Matthew 21:43)… and all these same Ministers of the Lord would continue to evangelize throughout the Earth in no less the power of the Holy Spirit in the mighty Name and Atonement of Jesus. But now the Gospel Message was to be a redemption with eternal life outside the commonwealth of Israel that then must have been authorized/granted (the Gospel of eternal life being just one of two parts of the ‘New Testament Gospel’ that Christendom has wrongly centered itself upon) that was to be now coupled with the Gospel of eternal glory … of the hope of attaining Christ’s heavenly Kingdom inheritance portion, that would now be granted to the worthy redeemed of the ‘Nation of the One New Man’… who were/are willing to be disciples/followers of Jesus, taught by the Words of Jesus, deny the soul of self-centeredness and be transformed into Christlikeness (the salvation of the soul) through the power of the Holy Spirit! (1st Timothy 1:11; 2:4)
What was happening was not the ceasing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit at that period of time of transition; but the ceasing of signs, wonders, and miracles as witness to Jews that their King and Kingdom had come, in that call to repent, be baptized in the name of their Messiah for remission of sins, and receive the gift of holy pneuma, and be numbered among the participants in the Kingdom of Israel’s great restoration prophesied for that day. That door had closed. And shortly, the Temple and all possibilities of witness of their having attained unto the Kingdom were cut off. Those Joel-related works of the Holy Spirit ceased. Another Nation more worthy of the heavenly calling is raised up. All stops had been opened in the Kingdom inheritance call to the Jews. The Holy Spirit poured out His power on Believing Jews and Gentiles. ‘See and believe’ was the required appeal to the Nation of Israel. (1st Corinthians 1)
But once even that all-out ‘appeal’ fell on deaf ears and blind eyes, the signs, wonders, and miracles to Israel stopped. What followed in the Church of the One New Man can be described as measured restraint in the giving of gifts by the Holy Spirit as it is He “dividing to every man severally as he will”… and is now in perfect New Testament harmony with Christ’s Words “…blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” It switched/moved away from the outward witness before believing to an inward work ‘without seeing’ upon the soul. A new emphasis on fruits of the spirit as opposed to the gifts of the Holy Spirit “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:22-25)
After Israel’s demise and the Holy Spirit’s stopping the manifesting of the power gifts in any confirming the Word of the Jewish Nation’s preeminence in the Earth because of their loss in the heavenly calling and deferring of their earthly promised Kingdom… the issue of the lessening of gifts and power in the Followers of Jesus in promoting the Nation of the One New Man was not entirely one of the Holy Spirit’s making. It was partially because the redeemed believers began seeking and depending upon and identifying with the gifts more than lending themselves selflessly to the internal purposes of the Giver. And partially by the leaven of tares entering the Church moving God’s Gospel emphasis away from the internal aspects of the soul; which is drawing the power of the Holy Spirit on the redeemed soul into an active loving faith in selfless yielding transformation into Christlikeness. The error came by over-emphasizing God’s grace/making the word ‘grace’ (which to the redeemed soul should mean the ongoing power of the Holy Spirit brought to bear upon the soul) exclusively mean in religious Christianese: ‘God’s undeserved, unmerited favor,’ and thereby promoting as the whole ‘Gospel’ an all-inclusiveness of inheritance in Kingdom ‘glory’ (meaning the great favor of God) by merely being ‘born-again’ in Christ. Both of these heart conditions can easily answer to being obstacles to both the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit filling and flowing in the believer.
The Day of Pentecost was the day of Israel’s supernatural call to the Nation’s Post- Crucifixion repentance whereby they, as God’s ancient called Nation, were to be God’s theocratic government in the Earth and its heaven, who then would receive the commission of taking the Gospel of the Messiah to the Gentile Nations. Just as they had been instructed and exhorted (with threat) to do in the Post-Resurrection and Pre-Pentecost Gospels’ narratives.
The Gift of Tongues was the reversal of Babel power by the same power of the Holy Spirit… in that now Israel would preach in all the languages of the Nations. It’s what is called The Great Commission. (Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23; Acts 1:6-8) See this commission also in Mark 16:14-2… “Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
The Ascension of Jesus (Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:9-11)
“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God… (after which it should be seen by Christians today that the Holy Spirit was sent on the Day of Pentecost to fulfill the Great Commision… Acts 2:38… is the same gift of power, Post-Crucifixion, for the same Commission given to His Jewish disciples in the Gospels) And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” This is not the same ‘message Christians preach of salvation by grace through faith.’ This is Israel in their ministry calling in answer to the promise of God to Abraham (Genesis 18:18, Zechariah 14, Ezekiel 36, Habakkuk 2:14) of blessing the Gentiles and making disciples unto their Messiah and filling the Earth with His Glory.
This was the ministry of the disciples of the Lord documented throughout the entire Book of Acts. This is the thrust of Joel’s prophecy, and if Israel had repented and received Jesus as their Messiah when Peter answered their “what shall we do” question, Joel’s prophecy fulfillment would have immediately followed. But since they did not, they were rejected in Acts 28:28. So then their inheritance is yet to be fulfilled… and that being in the future at the time of their repentance at the Return of their Messiah, the then-recognized King of the restored Kingdom of Israel, when the Holy Spirit will then be poured out on the repentant Jews of Israel and they will speak in the tongues of all the Gentile Nations as the Spirit gives them utterance to tell “…the wonderful works of God.” (Acts 2:11, Joel 2:28-29)
Next lesson… the Holy Spirit in the New Testament Church (the Nation of the One New Man).
