"Welcome to the Shuv Show. I’m your host, Christene Jackman.
Featuring: Hidden Insights on Yom Teruah in the Ancient Psalm of Asaph: Psalm 81
Tonight’s topic deals with some interesting insights and another look at Psalm 81 and the Feast of the Lord called Feast of Trumpets, or in Hebrew: Yom Teruah, which literally means, “Day of Shouts.”
The blast on the shofar called the Teruah תְּרוּעָה consists of 9 short blasts which signify “an acclamation of joy or war; especially a clangor of trumpets (shofarot).” A call to gather. It’s interesting to note that the psalmist Asaph’s name means: “Gatherer.”
This day is also called Rosh Hashanah or Head of the Year, as it is the start of the new agricultural calendar year.
Yom Teruah marks the beginning of the fall High Holy days that includes Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and Sukkot (Feast of Booths/Tabernacles).
Let’s dig in, taking it section by section. Starting with Vayikra/Leviticus 23:
Vayikra/Leviticus 23:4,24-25
4 'These are the moedim (appointed times) of YHVH, holy convocations (mikrah: a calling together, a rehearsal) which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them . . . 24 Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a shabbatone (complete rest), a zikrone (reminder/memorial) by teruah (blowing [of trumpets]) a mikrah kodesh (holy convocation). 25 'You shall not do any (melahka avoda) laborious/business work, but you shall present an offering by fire to YHVH.'"
Okay. So, this is the Original Word/Command from the Lord regarding Yom Teruah or Feast of Trumpets. Key items to note:
1. It is a moed, an appointed time of the Lord.
2. It happens on the 1st Day of the 7th Month or Tishrei 1, which means it’s a dark moon or new moon. Yom Teruah is the only feast of the Lord that is scheduled on a dark moon. The shabbat rest day begins at sundown on the last day of Elul and ends at sundown on Tishrei 1. Remember, the Biblical day begins at sundown. See week 1 of Creation week.
Question to ask yourself: why on a dark moon?
3. It is a shabbatone, meaning a day of complete rest, a shabbat.
4. It is a zikrone, a memorial or reminder.
Question: what are we remembering? Who is remembering?
5. Yom Teruah is a mikrah kodesh, meaning holy convocation: a set apart, calling together, a rehearsal.
Question: what are we rehearsing?
6. It is celebrated by blowing of the shofar.
Question: why blow the shofar?
7. No business work is allowed on this holy day.
8. If the Temple were standing, you would present an offering by fire to the Lord.
Scripture interprets Scripture. Sometimes more details are found elsewhere in the Bible.
For example, look at Psalm 81 . . . "
