Biography of Abu’l-Hasan Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal.
Assalamu Alaikum, sisters, brothers, friends and elders, we welcome you to a series of videos on Muslim heritage and Islamic scholars. and today in this video we will describe biography of Abu’l-Hasan Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal.
Abu’l-Hasan Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal was one of the most prominent scholars of the Islamic Golden Age, remembered for his expertise in astronomy, mathematics, and astrology. He was born around the middle of the tenth century in Kairouan, a celebrated city in present-day Tunisia. Kairouan was a center of Islamic learning and culture, known for producing jurists, physicians, and scientists. It was within this vibrant intellectual environment that Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal grew up, receiving his early education in the sciences, philosophy, and religious studies. The city’s libraries and scholarly circles gave him access to works translated from Greek and Persian, which inspired his lifelong interest in the study of the heavens and the principles of calculation.
Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal soon distinguished himself as an outstanding astronomer and mathematician. He became widely known in his time for writing detailed treatises on the movement of celestial bodies, the structure of the heavens, and the methods of astronomical calculation. His most famous work was a large astronomical and astrological encyclopedia often referred to as “The Great Introduction to the Science of Astrology.” This book was organized into several volumes and chapters, carefully explaining the principles of astrology, planetary positions, and their influence on earthly events. The clarity and depth of his writing made the work valuable not only in the Islamic world but also in Europe, where it was later translated into Latin and widely studied during the Middle Ages.
As a court scholar, Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal served the Zirid dynasty, which ruled over parts of North Africa. His position at court gave him both the resources and the recognition necessary to continue his scholarly pursuits. He was admired by rulers for his precise astronomical observations and his skill in creating horoscopes, which were considered important for political and personal decisions during that period. Yet his contributions went far beyond astrology. His careful records of celestial events and his methods of calculation helped to refine the broader field of astronomy and influenced scholars for centuries.
Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal lived during a time when science and religion were often studied together, and he is remembered as a scholar who embodied the harmony between intellectual curiosity and spiritual reflection. He wrote with a sense of responsibility, stressing that knowledge of the stars was not simply for prediction, but also for understanding the order and wisdom of the Creator. His works circulated widely, becoming standard references in both Islamic and European universities for generations.
He passed away around the year 1037 in Kairouan, the city of his birth, after a long life devoted to scholarship. His death was a significant loss to the community of scholars, as he had served not only as an astronomer and mathematician but also as a teacher who guided many students in the sciences. He was buried in Kairouan, and over time, a modest shrine was built at his burial place. The shrine was not a grand structure, but it was respected as a site of remembrance for a man whose intellectual contributions had reached far beyond his homeland.
The history of his shrine reflects the enduring respect for scholars in Islamic civilization. For centuries, people visited the shrine to honor his memory, particularly students of astronomy and astrology who regarded him as one of their masters. As Kairouan continued to flourish as a city of learning, the shrine of Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal stood among other significant cultural and religious sites, reminding visitors of the deep tradition of scholarship in the city. Although political changes and periods of neglect affected many historical monuments in North Africa, his shrine retained symbolic value as a resting place of knowledge and devotion.
Today, Abu’l-Hasan Ali ibn Abi l-Rijal is remembered not only in Tunisia but also in the wider history of science. His writings, especially the Great Introduction, represent one of the important bridges through which ancient knowledge passed into Europe and became part of the foundation of medieval science. His shrine in Kairouan continues to be associated with this legacy, serving as both a physical memorial and a symbol of the enduring power of knowledge. His life story illustrates the respect that Islamic civilization gave to scholars and the way their legacies were preserved through memory, writing, and sacred resting places.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and tomorrow we will narrate biography of Islamic Scholar Al-Saghani. we will also narrate the history of her shrine. Finally, we pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen.
