Asslamoalaikqum Sisters, Brothers, Friends and elders :
We welcom to you in our series of Statements. And today's
is statement number 31. And we will be describe in this that: ( Why is Surah Yunus named after Prophet Yunus ) So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make our this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.

Surah Yunus is the tenth chapter of the Holy Quran. It was revealed in Makkah and consists of one hundred and nine verses. This Surah is named after Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him, even though his story is not mentioned in full detail here. The naming of this chapter after him highlights an important lesson that his life and repentance bring for believers. The Quran does not name its chapters randomly. Each title carries wisdom and reflects the main themes of the Surah. In the case of Surah Yunus, the name draws attention to the mercy of Allah and the hope of salvation even after hardship, as shown in the story of Prophet Yunus.

Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him, was sent to the people of Nineveh. They had fallen into idol worship and disobedience. Despite his repeated calls, they refused to believe. Out of frustration, Prophet Yunus left his people before receiving Allah’s command to do so. He boarded a ship, and when it faced a storm, lots were drawn to throw someone overboard. His name was chosen, and he was cast into the sea, where a great fish swallowed him by the will of Allah. In the darkness of the belly of the fish, Prophet Yunus realized his mistake. He turned to Allah with deep sincerity, supplicating with the famous words mentioned in Surah Al Anbiya verse 87: “There is no deity except You, exalted are You, indeed I have been of the wrongdoers.” Allah accepted his repentance, forgave him, and rescued him from distress. Later, his people also repented, and Allah spared them from punishment, making them one of the few nations to collectively turn back to Allah.

Although Surah Yunus does not narrate the full story, its naming after him emphasizes two important lessons. The first is that turning back to Allah with repentance, even after making mistakes, opens the door to His mercy. The second is that communities can be saved from destruction if they truly repent and return to faith. These messages perfectly fit the themes of Surah Yunus, which focus on belief in Allah, the reality of the Hereafter, and hope through repentance.

One of the key verses of Surah Yunus that reflects this mercy is verse 58: “Say, in the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, let them rejoice, it is better than what they accumulate.” This verse highlights that Allah’s mercy is greater than worldly possessions. The story of Prophet Yunus is an example of this mercy in action, as Allah forgave him and his people. Naming the Surah after Yunus draws the attention of believers to rejoice in Allah’s mercy and never lose hope.

Another verse that reflects the lesson of Prophet Yunus is Surah Yunus verse 98: “Then has there not been a single city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.” This verse makes it clear why the Surah carries his name. The people of Yunus were unique among nations because they accepted the message after initially rejecting it, and Allah rewarded them by lifting the punishment. This is a sign of Allah’s mercy and a reminder that sincere repentance benefits both individuals and entire communities.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, also referred to Yunus in hadith. In Sahih Bukhari, Hadith number 3397, the Prophet said: “One should not say that I am better than Yunus bin Matta.” This hadith shows the humility of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and highlights the respect and honor given to Yunus among the Prophets. By naming the Surah after him, Allah honors his legacy and emphasizes the lessons that his story provides for humanity.

Surah Yunus also carries the broader theme of patience in delivering the message of truth. While Yunus left his people in haste, the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was reminded to remain patient and continue his mission despite rejection. In Surah Yunus verse 109, Allah says: “And follow what is revealed to you and be patient until Allah will judge, and He is the best of judges.” This verse indirectly connects to the lesson of Yunus, showing that patience is necessary in the path of da’wah, and leaving matters to Allah’s wisdom brings the best outcome.

Furthermore, the name of Surah Yunus symbolizes hope for believers who struggle with their own shortcomings. Many times, people feel overwhelmed by guilt for their mistakes. The story of Yunus reassures them that even a Prophet, when he repented sincerely, was forgiven and rescued. This aligns with the message of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, who said in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith number 4250: “Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.” This hadith reflects the same message as Surah Yunus, which is to never lose hope in Allah’s mercy.

In conclusion, Surah Yunus is named after Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him, because his story contains profound lessons of repentance, mercy, and collective salvation. It reminds us that Allah forgives those who sincerely turn to Him, whether they are individuals or entire communities. The Surah connects the mission of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, with earlier Prophets and teaches patience, trust, and reliance upon Allah’s judgment. By naming this chapter after Yunus, Allah draws attention to the power of repentance and His boundless mercy. It is a reminder for all generations that no matter how dark the situation, turning to Allah with humility and faith can transform despair into hope and punishment into forgiveness.

We conclude today's discourse with our this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Amen
