This video by Dr. Eric Berg DC, titled "How to Reverse POOR Eyesight (Especially Over 50!)", discusses various factors contributing to poor vision and offers natural remedies.
The core issue is often the loss of mitochondria in the cones of the retina, particularly the macula, which are crucial for daylight, color, and fine detail vision. As people age, especially over 50, they need more light to see, experience decreased contrast sensitivity, increased glare, and can develop age-related macular degeneration. Other eye problems discussed include cataracts (clouding of the lens) and glaucoma (increased eye pressure), often linked to high blood sugar and diabetes. Prolonged screen time also contributes to eye strain and reduced focus.
To improve and reverse poor eyesight, the video suggests several strategies:
Red Light Therapy: Using a specific wavelength (670 nm) of red light for 3 minutes once a week, with eyes closed, can enhance mitochondrial efficiency.
Increase Mitochondria: Regular exercise, intermittent fasting, and a low-carb ketogenic diet with sufficient sleep can promote mitochondrial production.
Outdoor Focus: Spending at least two hours a day looking at distant objects to relax eye muscles strained by close-up screen focus.
Nutritional Support:
Vitamin A: Essential for vision, found in egg yolks, liver, cod liver oil, and butter. Issues with the liver or gallbladder can impair absorption.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin: Protect the eyes against oxidation and UV radiation, found in kale, pistachios, Swiss chard, and highly bioavailable in egg yolks.
Vitamin D3: High doses, taken with K2 and magnesium, are suggested to help with glaucoma.
Niacin: Also mentioned as beneficial for glaucoma.
Address Floaters: Prolonged intermittent fasting (e.g., 48-72 hours) can induce autophagy, helping the body recycle damaged proteins that cause floaters.
Cataract Reversal: Avoiding sugar and refined carbohydrates, and using N-acetylcarnosine (NAC) eye drops, are suggested to dissolve glycated proteins in the lens. Saffron and red meat (for carnosine) are also mentioned as beneficial.
Reading Light: For those over 50, using a high CCT warm LED light (3000-4000K) can immediately improve reading vision.
Sunlight Hack: Watching the sunrise or sunset (avoiding direct sun) can reset circadian rhythm and boost intracellular melatonin.
20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, blinking every 5 seconds, to combat eye strain from screens and prevent dry eyes.
Dry Eye: Can be caused by screen time, vitamin A deficiency, or a lack of vitamin B1, which affects tear production. Addressing B1 deficiency by reducing carbohydrates, coffee, and tea is recommended.
Reduce Advanced Glycated End Products (AGEs): These are formed when sugar binds to protein. A low-carb diet, intermittent fasting, alpha-lipoic acid, and polyphenols (turmeric, resveratrol, dark chocolate) can help reduce AGEs. Vitamin D and magnesium are also crucial anti-inflammatories.
The video emphasizes that many vision problems are not just a result of aging but can be significantly improved or reversed through lifestyle and nutritional interventions.
